Note here: It has been noted that he has been traveling with a male roommate (another Canadian champion skater who is just a few years older then he is) to all of his competitions and they have shared the same room. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. Also, it is considered that the resolution of the screen will not be less than 1.280 x720px and have a built-in projector. There is a fleeting rumor that it will run on the new iPhone OS 4.0, expected to be implemented in the June 28th iPhone 4 announcement (above). We should see a new beta release of iPhone OS4.0 and an updates Software Development Kit (SDK) this January 27th at the special announcement event Apple has planned at Moscone Center. The tablet is expected to come with a virtual keyboard, along with support for audio & video, e-books and videoconferencing and be equipped with a 3D graphics card. The tablet will be aimed at consumers who want a way to browse the web (with HTML5 savvy), play iTunes content (and particularly that new iTunes LP and Extras stuff) and view rich multimedia magazines and newspaper content along electronic editions of traditional books.

"The tablet will be supported by multiple [mobile] carriers," said Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech, citing unnamed sources he said were close to the situation. Apple's win effectively bans the clone maker from continuing to steal the Mac OS X operating system which includes the making of machines and the distribution of non-Apple computers loaded with the Mac operating system. Ouch!

The Court also bans Psystar from developing or supplying technology that goes around Apple's copyright protection methods. And Psytar is also banned from helping others with the creation of Mac clones or any related technology.

Really important is that the decision is worded to include every version of Mac OS X including any future updates including Snow Leopard.

"Because a copyrighted work need not be included within the scope of discovery to fall within the scope of a permanent injunction, Snow Leopard will not be excluded from the scope of the injunction," Judge William Alsup wrote in the ruling. "Rather, it will be included to the extent that it -- and any other non-litigated Apple software programs of similar character to Mac OS X -- qualifies as a protected work under the Copyright Act."

Yowza!

The Judge warns the Psytar company that it will be "selling Rebel EFI at its peril, and risks finding itself held in contempt if its new venture falls within the scope of the injunction."

                        Psystar's president, Rudy Pedraza, said the company was shutting down immediately. All eight employees have been dismissed and the company's website is kaplunk. I AM doing Leno though. And lookin into something for NYE (New Year's Rocking Eve) ... :)"

ABC is clearly discriminating against a performer for being gay and enough is enough. A full boycott against all things ABC, Disney, et al, has been called for. ABC seems determined to destroy Adam Lambert's career and it is time America took action. The best action is the pocketbook. Buy nothing from Disney or ABC. Remove the ABC channel from your TV.

Lambert was booked to perform on Kimmel's outdoor stage Dec. 17 before his American Music Awards performance.

Previously, ABC canceled Lambert's appearance on "Good Morning America." CBS' "Early Show" swooped in and booked Lambert instead, only to get blasted by some viewers for blurring video footage showing Lambert kissing a male performer during the AMAs.

HandBrake 0.9.4 Released

An updated HandBrake has been released by the French. It is a work of art. You can re-render almost any video into a higher better quality video. WMV, AVI and ASF videos look fantastic. It is fast. Applause to the French for doing a spectacular job on one of our most important P2P tools.

Download HandBrake 0.9.4

x264
A large portion of these speed, size, and quality improvements come to us for free, from the x264 project. The past year, like every year, has seen some massive improvements for that video encoding engine. As always, it has been further hand-optimized for better performance. But it has also gained new features like macroblock tree rate control and weighted P-Frame prediction. The end result? Better picture quality, at a smaller size, faster.

So, if x264 alone gives us smaller, better, faster encodes...what have HandBrake's developers been doing over the past year?

Oh, all sorts of things :-)
  New build system
HandBrake has a new, much improved compilation system, which allows easy 64-bit and parallel builds, as well as providing easy extendability for future improvements to the application. 64-bit builds tend to perform approximately 10% better than their 32-bit brethren. There is no Snow Leopard magic here: the performance gains can also be realized on Intel Macs running 10.5, as well as Linux systems.
  Soft subtitles
HandBrake can now include subtitle tracks that can be turned on and off, instead of rendering them onto the video track permanently (which also reduces video compression). This means you can include Closed Captioning data from DVDs and TV broadcasts, or find SRT text subtitle files on the 'net and include them. When using the Matroska container, you can also store the graphical subtitle images (VobSubs) from a DVD as a separate track. An added benefit is that multiple subtitle tracks can be included in the same output video.
  Live preview
Ever wished you could test HandBrake settings before spending hours on a full encode? Now, you can.

The picture settings and preview sheet has been broken out into a filters and picture settings inspector, and a preview window. The preview window can show you still frames from your source, like always. But it also lets you start to encode a short clip from the current preview with the currently selected settings, and view the results right there inside of HandBrake.
  Better input support, for DVD and non-DVD sources alike
HandBrake now uses a better DVD reading library called libdvdnav. This means it can now read some DVDs it had trouble with before, and it can also select different angles on a DVD. As well, some bugs in underlying libraries have been patched.

For non-DVD sources, HandBrake now offers improved transport stream support, especially for high definition sources. A number of decoding bugs have been resolved as well, so Windows users will no longer need fear AAC audio, nor Mac users fear VC-1 video.
  Constant quality encoding
No more looking for the perfect bitrate for a source--HandBrake is migrating to quality-based encoding. This means that instead of telling encoders to use a specific size and vary quality to meet it, we tell the encoder to vary size to meet a given quality level. Overall quality improves, since bits are spent only when they are needed, and are saved when they are not. While this means output size is somewhat unpredictable, the results in picture quality speak for themselves.

As part of this change, the quality slider has been made more prominent, and now works off the quality values used by the video encoders, instead of a confusing, custom, percentage scale.

Another result is that 2-pass encoding is not needed. A single pass at a constant quality provides just as much compression efficiency as two passes at an average bitrate.
  Presets
There are no more presets for the PSP, PS3, or Xbox 360. Quite frankly, they didn't work well. None of the development team members own the devices, so testing was minimal and support was nonexistent. Keeping up with the firmware vagaries and ambiguous specifications of these devices was not fun--we get enough of that from Apple's kit, and those we all have around to test on. The new "Normal" preset should work perfectly fine on any device that supports standard Main Profile H.264 with AAC-LC audio in an MP4 file, which the PS3 and 360 ostensibly do.

There are no more Film, Animation, or Television presets. Instead of a confusing series of content-targeted presets, there is now a single, constant quality, High Profile preset with automated filtering and all the H.264 bells and whistles. This preset should work on the PS3 and 360 too, although we make no promises.

It is now possible to import individual presets in all the graphical interfaces, and to export them as well, in the Mac and Linux GUIs.
  Focus on what we do best
As we've had on our roadmap for quite awhile now, one of our goals for version 0.9.4 was to refocus on HandBrake's key strengths and to remove dead weight. As part of this process, several containers and a codec have been removed from HandBrake.

AVI: AVI is a rough beast. It is obsolete. It does not support modern container features like chapters, muxed-in subtitles, variable framerate video, or out of order frame display. Furthermore, HandBrake's AVI muxer is vanilla AVI 1.0 that doesn't even support large files. The code has not been actively maintained since 2005. Keeping it in the library while implementing new features means a very convoluted data pipeline, full of conditionals that make the code more difficult to read and maintain, and make output harder to predict. As such, it is now gone. It is not coming back, and good riddance.

OGG/OGM: HandBrake's OGM muxer is just as out of date. It hasn't been actively maintained in years either, and it too lacks support for HandBrake's best features. It requires conditionals to work around missing functionality too...only this one gets tested so infrequently the conditionals were never even put in the code, so it just fails when you try to do anything advanced. This one is not coming back either. And yes, we're aware of HTML 5. For patent-free muxing, HandBrake still has Matroska, which is a much better container anyway.

XviD: HandBrake, these days, is almost entirely about H.264 video, aka MPEG-4 Part 10. This makes it rather...superfluous to include two different encoders for an older codec, MPEG-4 Part 2. When choosing between FFmpeg's and XviD's, it came down to a matter of necessity. We need to include libavcodec (FFmpeg) for a bunch of other parts of its API, like decoding. Meanwhile, XviD's build system causes grief (it's the most common support query we get about compiling, after x264's requirement of yasm). Since we mainly use MPEG-4 Part 2 for testing/debugging, and recommend only H.264 for high quality encodes, Xvid's undisputed quality edge over FFmpeg's encoder is inconsequential, while FFmpeg's speed edge over XviD is important to us.
  But wait, there's more!
Audio-video synchronization has been further improved.

HandBrake can now pass-through DTS audio from a source when encoding to the Matroska container, just like it has previously for AC3 audio.

Mac users can now encode AAC audio using OS X's Core Audio, rather than using the open source libfaac. Core Audio offers far superior audio quality.

A new custom anamorphic mode allows precise control of all parameters, for power users.

Decomb now offers an optional, slower, better quality deinterlacing method called EEDI2.

Library updates for (besides x264) FFmpeg, libtheora (1.1), libmp4v2, libfaac/faad, libvorbis, and libmkv.

Of course, there have also been countless improvements to the user interfaces, and many technical changes under the hood to improve things like sample interleaving and framerate shaping.

Repeal Prop 8 Campaign

The Game Is On! The campaign to Repeal Prop 8 began yesterday with thousands of volunteers, including this one, signing on to teams, printing out the Petition and beginning the process of getting more then 1 million signatures by the deadline date of April 2010. Clarifies that the initiative shall not be interpreted to require any priest, minister, pastor, rabbi, or other person to perform a marriage in violation of his or her religious beliefs. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Over the long run, this measure would likely have little fiscal impact on state and local governments. (09-0042.)

To the Honorable Secretary of State of California:

    We, the undersigned, registered, qualified voters of California, residents of __________ County (or City and County), hereby propose amendments to the Constitution of California and petition the Secretary of State to submit the same to the voters of California for their adoption or rejection at the next succeeding general election or at any special statewide election held prior to that general election or otherwise provided by law. The proposed constitutional amendments read as follows: This amendment would amend an existing section of the California Constitution. Existing language proposed to be deleted is printed in <s>strikeout type</s>. Language proposed to be added is printed in underlined type.

    Section 1. To protect religious freedom, no court shall interpret this measure to require any priest, minister, pastor, rabbi, or other person authorized to perform marriages by any religious denomination, church, or other non-profit religious institution to perform any marriage in violation of his or her religious beliefs. The refusal to perform a marriage under this provision shall not be the basis for lawsuit or liability, and shall not affect the tax-exempt status of any religious denomination, church or other religious institution.
     Section 2. To provide for fairness in the government’s issuance of marriage licenses, Section 7.5 of Article I of the California Constitution is hereby amended to read as follows: Sec. 7.5. <s>Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.</s> Marriage is between only two persons and shall not be restricted on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

Apple Moves To iTouch POS

Apple Sales people will soon be using the iTouch instead of the current mobile checkout system away from the Pocket PC to the iPod touch, several sources claim.

A distinguishing trait of Apple Stores is the ability of clerks to handle payments away from a fixed station; the company has, however, been using Pocket PCs for this purpose since 2005, in spite of launching the iPhone and iPod touch in 2007. The move to the Touch is said to be coming in time for the 2009 holiday shopping season, and already in effect at a Valley Fair Mall location in Santa Clara, California, possibly as a trial.The Touch is said to have said have several advantages, such as speed, finger control, a small size and better reliability. Clerks must use a stylus to control the Pocket PC, and it is considered prone to crashing and losing its Wi-Fi connection. "I hate these things," one user is said to complain. "In the middle of a transaction, I'll hit 'next' and end up dumped back at the login screen. It's so frustrating." The unit is in fact alleged to have been partly responsible for long lines during the iPhone 3G launch in 2008.

A major advantage for Apple corporate should be expenses, as new Pocket PC terminals cost between $800 and $1,000, and the company must pay not only for their maintenance but backups to ensure breakdowns do not disrupt business. Using first-party hardware is expected to cut down on both initial and follow-up costs.

It is that the Touch transition did not happen earlier mainly because of firmware limitations. Checkout clerks need barcode scanners and credit card readers, and these could not have been easily (or cheaply) supported for the Touch prior to iPhone 3.0. The code's support for third-party point-of-sale gear and software leaves little reason to use a Pocket PC.

The Windows 7 Failure

Check this out - Look at how "buff" Justin Long is! It was heartbreaking to hear. Later Ronan sang his song "I Was Loved By You" to say goodbye to his 'wingman'. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. Snow Leopard will be available as an upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard users for $29.

What will it do for you? This upgrade (10.6) will result in a better, faster operating system for the Mac user and will make the life of the Mac user easier then ever. It uses the next-generation technologies and is more accessible. It even supports Exchange. The upgrade will make your computer run faster, use less RAM and free up to 6GB of hardrive space. It is also 64bit (Leopard is 32bit) which means it is even harder for hackers to create a worm, virus or trojan in the Mac world.

Other features includes:

* Faster to wake up and shut down.
* A more advanced, more nimble Finder.
* New look, new features for Expose and Stacks.
* Quicker Time Machine backup.
* Faster, more reliable installation.
* Smaller Footprint.
* Another leap forward for QuickTime.
* Innovative Chinese character input.
* More reliable, higher-resolution iChat.
* Automatic updates for printer drivers.

Major features include:

- ActiveSync and Exchange 2007 support Following in the footsteps of the iPhone, Snow Leopard makes these Microsoft technologies native to the OS. That means Apple's e-mail, calendar, and contacts apps work just peachy with Exchange 2007 server, giving users the same capabilities as Microsoft Entourage but with the better-designed, less-memory-intensive apps -- Mail, iCal, and Address Book -- included in OS X.

- Exposé integration in the Dock The Mac OS X Dock makes it easy to access applications, open documents, and common folders, a concept Windows 7 is stealing in its retooled taskbar. Open documents are even more easily accessed in Snow Leopard, thanks to the integration of Exposé. Now when you click and hold an app icon in the Dock, you get preview windows for each of its open documents, allowing you to switch easily among them or to close them, all without having to clutter your screen with document windows.

- Automatic location detection When you travel, it's easy to get mixed up as to when your appointments are, since your computer is still in your "home" time zone, and you have to mentally calculate the current time when looking at the calendar or clock. Sure, you can change the time zone in the Date & Time system preference, but it's easy to forget. So Snow Leopard changes the time zone for you automatically (if you set that as the default behavior), using Wi-Fi mapping to figure out where you are -- you will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi access point or router. iCal can also be set to adjust the times to the current time zone automatically, so your calendar always reflects the current times.

- The new Preview is more like Adobe Reader I have nothing against Adobe Reader, but I love that Preview now can open multiple PDF documents, display their contents as contact sheets, and show thumbnails of pages in a sidebar for easy navigation. In other words, it works a lot like Adobe Reader. That's one fewer app to launch -- and since Preview loads much faster than Reader, I can get to my PDFs' contents much faster now.

- Movie and screencast recording Snow Leopard takes the formerly $35 QuickTime Pro and makes it a standard, free app in Mac OS X. That means you can record movies and -- great for many marketing, education, and Web professionals -- screencasts from your Mac with no additional software.

- Systemwide automatic text replacement Automatic text substitution as you type is nothing new; Microsoft Word has had it for more than a decade. But Snow Leopard lets you specify such substitutions via the Keyboard system preference, so you have a common set of substitutions available to all applications. Right now, only TextEdit, Mail, and various Apple apps use this common auto-text service, but if other software developers adopt it, you may finally get all your text-oriented apps to autocorrect the same way.

- Snow Leopard trackpads now support all gestures, no matter what Mac model you have. (Of course, your Mac has to have a gesture-capable trackpad, so models before 2006 aren't helped out by this update.)

Apple beats Microsoft to the punch again. Microsoft had moved their release date of Windows 7 up to "mid-October". Apple completed work on Snow Leopard two weeks ago and are releasing it on August 28th. That should blow the wind out of sales for Windows 7 and every critic will now compare to two upgraded operating systems and chastise Microsoft once again for trying to copy OS X.

Barbra, Leopard & The iTablet

Barbra's new album "Love Is The Answer: arrives next month.
